During the summer of 2022 we continued work we started the previous fall on the French Creek (Jackson Creek) Trail, just north of McCall. We re-routed several sections to keep them out of the bog, and rehabbed the old trail. Check our instagram @payettetrails for more pics.
In mid-July Alex gave a mini-excavator training for three employees of the Payette National Forest, McCall Ranger District. They learned the basic skills they needed to get out on their own and do some trail rehab, and successfully repaired a thrown track the next day! Great work to all involved.
For the fourth year running, Alex traveled to John Day, Oregon to lead a technical trail skills training for the US Forest Service, Malheur NF, This years topics included drainage, water management, and puncheon construction. In two short days we built a 16' puncheon using all native materials, and fixed several other wet spots.
From January to April Alex and the crew worked in Texas Hill Country to build trails for private clients, under the banner of Progressive Trail Design. Check out more pics in the gallery!
Fall of 2021 brought Payette Trails back to the home front, working on the Bear Pete and Jackson Creek trails up Warren Wagon Road. We hand built nearly 1000' of new trail, machine built another 1600', and rehabed almost 1500' of trenched out old trail. We will be working again out here next summer, but were stoked to be done for the season! Thanks to CIMBA and the Payette National Forest for putting this project together.
During June and July, 2021, Payette Trails performed maintenance work on the Nez-Perce Clearwater National Forest in Northern Idaho. After spending the spring in Texas it was great to be back on trails in the big trees! See the gallery for more pics.
For the third year running, Alex traveled to John Day, Oregon to lead a technical trail skills training for the US Forest Service, the John Day Watershed Council, and the Blues Crew (an awesome new volunteer crew out of Walla Walla, Washington!). This years topics included new trail design, layout, and construction, and tread and gully rehab, and as usual we got a ton of great work done. A huge thanks to the Malheur National Forest recreation staff for hosting the training, and everyone who participated.
At long last we have finished the Heinrich Demonstration Trail! After excessive rodent damage and vegetation appeared when the snow melted, we decided to surface the trail to prevent further damage. Volunteers spent 3 long days spreading 120 yards of composite materials, and Payette Trails employees then groomed and compacted the new surface. The trail is now officially open to the public, and you can read more here: https://valleycountypathways.org/heinrich-demo-trail-is-open/
Thanks to Valley County Pathways and all the local business that donated time and materials for this project!
During March and April of 2021 Alex traveled to Texas hill country to build machine and hand cut trails for private clients, under the banner of Progressive Trail Design. See more pics in the photo gallery!
During the summer of 2020 Alex advised the Idaho Trails Association with technical trail projects across the state of Idaho. The first week was spent logging out and performing tread and drainage maintenance on the beautiful Long Canyon Creek trail in Boundary County. The second week was spent on White Cap Creek in the headwaters of the Selway River, and the third trip took us to the abandoned Snow Peak Lookout, deep in the Idaho Panhandle National Forest.
During the last week of June, Alex led a training in grip hoist use, mechanical advantage, and footbridge construction. Over three days, and using nothing but hand tools, the trail and wilderness crews were able to build a 24' bridge, a 15' bridge, and repair several tread and drainage issues on the trail around Strawberry Lake.
With a scheduled opening of summer 2020 (delayed due to COVID!), we have finished the second trail of our Skills Park series for Facebook and the Central Oregon Trail Alliance, in Prineville, Oregon. Check the gallery to see more pics, or if you're in the neighborhood come out and see the park for yourself!
Now open, the 66 Trails Intermediate Skills Pod features 15 features across a 1/3 mile desert course. From wood berms to dirt features to log skinnies, this trail has a little bit of everything to level-up your skills!
Working with crews from the Forest Service and the John Day Watershed Council in 2019, Alex led a four day training in proper and effective drainage design and construction. With the crews working hard, we were even able to build a 24' turnpike to repair a boggy creek crossing.
Working with crews from the Forest Service and the Montana Conservation Corps, Alex provided consultation and training services to repair trails in the Rapid River watershed and the McCall area.
